Yes I agree that a stop at Ding Darling on Sanibel is also well worth the extra time. Just make sure you arrive for low tide so the birds are feeding close up.
I disagree skipping Alligator Alley but suggest arriving early and renting a bike there. That is the best way to see it in my opinion.
